Police in Los Angeles and Ontario and the California Department of Justice Friday were investigating the circumstances of a shooting involving an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer that left another man dead.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Sixth Street, according to the Ontario Police Department.
Responding officers found a man at the scene with a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Ontario Police Cpl. Eliseo Guerrero told City News Service.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting.
“The investigation is still in its preliminary stages. The (LAPD officer) is cooperating with the investigation,” Guerrero said.
The off-duty officer was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The nature of those injuries was unclear. Guerrero told City News Service it was unclear how the officer sustained his injuries.
“The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of an officer involved shooting, involving a Los Angeles police officer in the city of Ontario earlier this evening. The Los Angeles Police Department is fully cooperating with the investigation,” the LAPD said in a statement.
The California Department of Justice’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team began an investigation under a law that took effect in 2021 requiring the Department of Justice to investigate all fatal shootings of unarmed civilians by law enforcement officers, Attorney General Rob Bonta said Friday.
Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over to department’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review, Bonta said.
