Police Friday are investigating the deaths of two people who were killed when the sedan they were traveling in slammed into the back of a semi-trailer on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Sylmar .

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the northbound freeway near the Roxford Street exit at 10:41 p.m. Thursday when they found a dark-colored SUV had rear-ended a semi parked on the shoulder, CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig told City News Service.

The SUV burst into flames and the vehicle’s airbags deployed after it struck the semi, the CHP reported.

The occupants of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene, NBC 4 reported.

NBC 4 reported the driver of the semi was not injured.

The CHP issued a SigAlert for the closure of three lanes of the northbound freeway for several hours while it investigated the cause of the collision, Kravig said. At 4:30 a.m. Friday, the CHP reported the fifth and sixth lanes of the freeway remain closed.
