An apartment building on the west end of Riverside sustained water and fire damage after a blaze broke out on an upper floor and a pipe burst in one of the units, authorities said Wednesday.
The building emergency was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday at a complex in the 3900 block of Polk Street, near Magnolia Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Scott Richmond said four engine crews and a truck company, numbering nearly two dozen personnel, were sent to the location and encountered water pouring out of a burst pipe in a second-floor apartment.
“Further investigation revealed a working fire in the attic above the main living space,” Richmond said. “A first alarm structure fire was (declared), and the assigned units made a quick knockdown of the fire.”
He said the flames and water flows from the ruptured pipe required “salvage and overhaul in multiple apartments.”
Crews finished mopping up after roughly two hours.
There was no indication that any of the occupants were displaced, and the Red Cross was not requested to assist anyone.
Building management assumed responsibility for the cleanup and repairs.
The cause of the pipe failure and fire were under investigation Wednesday.
