An inmate at the Theo Lacy Facility died while in custody, authorities said Sunday.
Dennis Gomez, 31, was booked into Theo Lacy — a maximum-security jail in the city of Orange that houses both men and women — on Monday for vandalism and criminal street gang enhancement, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
On Saturday, he was found unresponsive and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2 p.m., the OCSD announced.
While the cause of death has not been released, authorities said that preliminary investigations ruled out suspicious circumstances. A final cause of death will be determined following an autopsy and toxicology report.
Gomez’s city of residence was not provided.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the in-custody death, and the sheriff’s department will conduct an in-custody death review.
