A Banning High School student was arrested for allegedly brandishing a weapon and threatening another student with it, authorities said Thursday.

High school resource officers responded to a report of an individual threatening another student with metal knuckles shortly before 9:20 a.m. Tuesday at Banning High School at 100 W. Westward Ave., according to the Banning Police Department.

After officers attempted to make contact with the boy, he evaded law enforcement by jumping a perimeter fence and began running away from the school, Banning police Capt. Brandon Smith said.

Additional officers were summoned and soon located the suspect off campus, in the area of San Gorgonio Avenue and Lincoln Street. When the patrolmen contacted him, “the juvenile began physically resisting officers and failed to comply with verbal commands,” the captain said.

“The juvenile was eventually taken into custody,” he said.

The boy was not hurt during the arrest, but “one officer involved sustained an injury,” Smith said.

The officer, whose identity was not disclosed, was treated for the minor injury at a regional medical center and released.

The boy was booked into Riverside Juvenile Hall on suspicion of possession of brass knuckles, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon on school grounds and making criminal threats.

His custody status was unknown Thursday.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact the department’s Detective Bureau at 951-922-3170 with reference number 26-282.
