A man was rushed to a hospital Saturday after suffering head injuries in a vehicle versus pedestrian crash in Menifee, authorities said.

Officers responded to the intersection of Menifee and Newport Roads around 5 a.m. Saturday to a report of a man lying in the roadway, according to the Menifee Police Department.

The reporting party told officers the man appeared to have been struck by a vehicle and had visible injuries. He was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition, according to the Menifee PD.

Officers were able to contact the driver of the involved vehicle, who was identified as Omar Sangines of Winchester.

Sangines told officers he had been driving his Kia sedan when he struck the man, police said. Sangines was the sole occupant of the vehicle and suffered minor injuries, according to the police department.

Investigators believe Sangines drove through a green light at a high rate of speed and struck the man while he was crossing Newport Road in the crosswalk.

Drugs were believed to be a factor in the crash, but the exact cause remained under investigation, authorities said. Sangines was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center.

The pedestrian’s identity was not immediately available.

Anyone with additional information about the accident was encouraged to contact Officer Gonzalez at 951-723-1634.
