A search was underway Saturday for a 41-year-old inmate of the Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp believed to have walked away.
Francisco Cervantes was discovered unaccounted for at 8 a.m. Saturday within the boundaries of the conservation camp in the Mojave Desert in Los Angeles County, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which was assisting local law enforcement agencies with the search.
Cervantes was received from San Bernardino County on May 21, 2024, while serving a five-year, eight-month sentence for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, corrections officials said.
He is Hispanic, 5-feet-7 inches tall, 194 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing an orange shirt and pants and black boots. He might also be wearing gray clothing and white tennis shoes, corrections officials said.
Anyone who sees Cervantes or knows where he might be was asked to call any law enforcement agency, 911 or Special Agent Lomer at 909-285-8738.
Corrections officials say 99% of those who leave an adult institution, camp or community-based program without permission are apprehended.
