The Halloween season will harken back to the Victorian era at the Museum of Riverside’s Heritage House, where an event is planned later this month that will feature popular cure-alls from the late 19th century, stories about the city’s original undertakers and other entertainment, it was announced Thursday.
The “Victorian Dark Carnival” is slated for the afternoon of Oct. 17 in and outside the Heritage House at 8193 Magnolia Ave.
“This is not a midway fair, but a gathering of curiosities and amusements as the Victorians knew them,” according to a museum statement. “Visitors can hear about the life and times of one of Riverside’s preeminent undertakers and funeral directors, or be swindled or amazed by a mermaid, get cured or taken in by a cure-all, consult with a tarot reader and see what the future holds.”
A number of displays are planned during the four-hour affair, including in-depth details on “Victorian mourning and death practices,” the museum stated.
