A “police taxi” with a distinctive paint job is being deployed around the city of Glendale to discourage people from drinking and driving, police said Wednesday.
The front half of the Ford Crown Victoria is painted like a standard black-and-white police car, but the back half is painted bright yellow with the word “taxi” on the side.
“The police taxi will be utilized at DUI checkpoints and placed on display at various locations and events throughout the city,” Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot said.
“The goal behind this unique vehicle is to increase public awareness, create discussion about the dangers of impaired driving, and (remind) motorists that they need to make responsible decisions while drinking,” Lightfoot said.
A message painted on the side says, “Choose your ride — taxi (or) police.”
Painted on the hood is the message: “Drive sober or get pulled over” and the estimated total cost of a drunken driving arrest — $15,649 when attorney fees and insurance increases are factored in.
