A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant pleaded guilty Monday to taking about $30,000 of her dead mother’s Social Security benefits.

U.S. District Judge S. James Otero scheduled a May 15 sentencing hearing for Vicki Lynn Gregory, who entered her plea to one federal count of theft of government property.

Gregory “intentionally concealed the death of her mother … in order to continue to receive and spend” money from the federally funded Widow’s Insurance Benefits program administered by the U.S. Social Security Administration, prosecutors wrote in a charging document last April.

Gregory will serve up to six months behind bars and pay no more than about $28,500 in restitution, according to her plea agreement.
