The San Diego (405) Freeway was back to its normal morning crawl Tuesday after a 27-year-old man threatened to jump from an overpass in Westminster during the evening rush hour, shutting down traffic in both directions for about an hour before he was safely taken into custody.
The man was reported to be on the Westminster Avenue overcrossing at 6:25 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Southbound lanes were closed between Westminster Avenue and Goldenwest Street and northbound lanes between Westminster and the Garden Grove (22) Freeway.
A portion of Westminster Avenue was also shut down between Willow Lanes and Springdale Street, according to Westminster police Cpl. Alan Aoki.
A crisis negotiator made contact with the man and talked him off the ledge, Aoki said.
He was taken into custody about 7:30 p.m. and all lanes were re-opened.
The man was to be taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and referral to additional resources, the corporal said.
