About 40 firefighters battled a five-acre hillside brushfire in Riverside that threatened structures in the Belvedere Heights neighborhood Sunday.

The fire was reported at 12:25 p.m. near Mount Vernon Avenue and Blaine Street, west of the Box Canyon Springs Mountain Reserve, according to the Riverside City Fire Department.

Flames were “making a run up the hill” before the fire was contained to five acres, said Battalion Chief Michael Staley.

Firefighters engaged in both structure protection and fire attack, and utilized at least one water dropping helicopter, he said. No evacuations were necessary.
