A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday in a collision on a two-lane road just north of San Jacinto.
The fatality occurred about 2:35 p.m. in the 19600 block of Gilman Springs Road, within a half-mile of the entrance to the Church of Scientology’s Golden Era campus, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Darren Meyer said the rider, whose name was not immediately released, was in the eastbound lane, approaching Sublette Road, when he began rounding a curve on his 2005 Yamaha.
“Due to the motorcycle’s excessive speed, the rider was unable to negotiate the curve,” Meyer said. “He allowed the vehicle to drift left across the double yellow lines, into the westbound lane of Gilman Springs.”
About that time, 58-year-old David Boring of Yucaipa was approaching the same curve on the westbound side in his 2008 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, Meyer said.
“The motorcycle collided head-on with the Chevrolet,” Meyer said.
The motorcyclist was hurled onto the pavement, suffering catastrophic injuries, according to Meyer.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within a few minutes and found the victim on the shoulder of the roadway in full cardiac arrest, according to reports from the scene.
Neither Boring nor his female passenger were injured.
Despite attempts to revive the motorcyclist, he died at the scene.
The CHP shut down both sides of Gilman Springs Road about 2:50 p.m., and the road remained closed until 5:20 p.m. while a preliminary investigation was conducted.
Meyer said an autopsy will determine whether alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the deadly collision.
