A man who was lying in a grocery store parking lot, holding an open blade to his throat and threatening to kill himself, was safely taken into custody Tuesday, Covina police reported.

Police were called to El Super Market at 960 W. Arrow Highway at 12:30 p.m., Sgt. Greg Peterson said.

After several minutes of failed negotiations to get the man to drop the knife, officers distracted him and then disarmed him. He continued to resist officers’ efforts to put him in handcuffs, prompting them to use less-than- lethal weapons to arrest him.

One officer suffered a minor injury during the altercation.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
