A documented gang member accused of trying to shoot two men during a confrontation in Jurupa Valley is slated to be arraigned later this month on attempted murder charges.

Alvaro Ivan Lopez Chacon, 24, was arrested Friday following a month-long investigation by Riverside County sheriff’s anti-gang personnel.

Along with two counts of attempted murder, Chacon faces sentence-enhancing gang activity and gun use allegations.

He made his initial court appearance Tuesday, when Superior Court Judge David Gunn appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for May 21 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The defendant is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Padilla, Chacon allegedly confronted the victims in the 5000 block of Troth Street, near 50th Street, about 7 p.m. on March 29, culminating in gunfire.

The unidentified men were not hit, and Chacon allegedly fled immediately afterward.

There was no word on what may have sparked the attack.

Gang Task Force detectives eventually identified Chacon as the alleged perpetrator, and an arrest warrant was served at his residence near the intersection of Golden Avenue and Stonewall Drive in Riverside, where he was taken into custody without a struggle.

According to court records, Chacon has no documented prior felony convictions. However, he has an unresolved misdemeanor case pending for allegedly carrying a concealed firearm.
