Three black and white films will wrap the 20th annual Arthur Lyons FilmNoir Festival Sunday with an eclectic mix of both popular and obscure titles from the noir era.
The film “Shakedown,” a film about an “unscrupulous” newspaper photographer who concocts fake news, will kick off the festival’s final day starting at 10 a.m., according to festival organizers. Falling in line with the dark and cynical themes, the Oscar-winning film “Mildred Pierce,” starring Joan Crawford as a divorcee with a selfish daughter who transforms herself into a businesswoman and gets wrongly accused of murder, will be screened to at 4 p.m. to cap off the four-day festival.
In between these classic movies, “The Glass Key,” the story of a crooked politician who is accused of murder, is scheduled for a 1 p.m. showing.
The noir festival began Thursday night with a champagne reception and cake-cutting ceremony at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, where the entire festival was set.
“The Night of the Hunter” ushered in the 12 films on the festival’s slate opening night with a dive into the world of “an odious sociopath posing as a devout country minister who attempts to reap a secret bounty hidden by two innocent children.”
Special guest Kathy Garver, an actress with more than 60 years of experience who played an uncredited child in the film, also attended the screening.
