Over the next five Saturdays, the City of Los Angeles will give away 1,000 rain barrels that can be used for irrigating lawns and gardens.
The 45- and 55-gallon barrels — donated by Coca-Cola — originally were used to hold syrup. The volunteer-run Keep Los Angeles Beautiful organization will manage the distribution of the barrels.
The first three distribution events will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The days and locations are:
— Saturday, at Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., in Valley Glen;
— Nov. 22, at Los Angeles Harbor College, 1111 Figueroa Place, in Wilmington; and
— Dec. 6, at Los Angeles City College, 855 N. Vermont Ave., in East Hollywood.
The two remaining giveaways are still being scheduled.
Online pre-registration is required and can be done online.
“During this time of an unprecedented drought, these rain barrels will be of great importance as we hope to receive significant rainfall this fall and winter and retain as much rainwater as possible,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said. “In addition, it shows how the city of Los Angeles continues to invest in innovative sustainability projects.”
