A year already?

MyNewsLA.com, the free local news website serving 13 million residents of the greater Los Angeles area, celebrates its first anniversary Tuesday.

All of us thank you for relying on MyNewsLA.com to bring you the latest breaking news from around Los Angeles and Orange counties. Celebrities, crime, government and just plain fun or weird – the news you need is all here for you as it happens. And it’s often brought to you well before you can find it anywhere else.

In just 12 months the site has built a monthly audience of nearly 400,000 readers just like you.

In September, 75 percent of readers were aged 54 and under, the demographic most sought by advertisers. Those numbers are pretty much the opposite of traditional newspapers and television where the majority of the audience is 55 and older.

And you most likely read MyNewsLA.com on a smartphone or tablet. In September, 67 percent of reading sessions were on those devices, and 33 percent on desktop and laptop computers.

What were the most well-read stories during MyNewsLA.com’s first year?

The single most popular article during the first year of operation was about a $15 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit against Herbalife. That was read by 268,000 people. The second most popular report was about a gay porn actor found guilty of a $1.5 million blackmail attempt. Nearly 66,000 people read that.

MyNewsLA.com’s staff of five editors publishes more than 40 articles daily about all aspects of life in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The top news stories in the morning and afternoon are included in our free newsletters.

Well over half of the readers are located in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, but the site has a national and even international following, especially for articles about Hollywood.

The site is regularly indexed by Google News and is now available in the Apple News app on iOS 9 devices such as iPhones and iPads.
