KTLA and KCBSwon best TV newscast honors and radio stations KNX and KPCC grabbed best radio newscast prizes during the 66th annual Golden Mike Awards.

Southern California Public Radio’s 89.3/KPCC won more of the awards than any other broadcast station, with 11. The public station’s staff won the trophy for best radio news reporting, best investigative reporting and both categories for best light or serious feature reporting.

The largest TV covey of awards went to NBC4, with nine awards including “Best Live Coverage of a News Story” for its work on the Cajon Pass Fire. Channel 4 won for categories including best consumer reporting, best government reporting, and two best video editing categories.

KTLA “News At Ten” took first place for the top 60 minute evening newscast, the “KTLA Morning News” was named best daytime newscast, and CBS2 won for the best 30 minute evening newscast, “CBS2 News at 11.”

Broadcast legend awards went to Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards for their combined seven decades of hosting television coverage of the Tournament of Roses Parade on KTLA.

Lifetime achievement awards went to NBC4’s Colleen Williams and Mike Landa, who recently retired after four decades at KNX/1070’s Orange County bureau.

In radio, KNX won best major market newscast exceeding 15 minutes, while KPCC took top honors for best newscast under 15 minutes.

Student-run “K-Beach Radio” at Long Beach State won the best small market newscast award. The station is broadcast on a high-definition subchannel of KJZZ-FM, at 88.1 HD-3, and on the Internet.

And one last Golden Mike went to KFWB, a perennial award winner in years past which is expected to cease transmitting in English later this year as it is sold to a company that operates foreign-language stations in other markets.

The awards from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California were handed out Saturday night at the Universal Hilton in Universal City.

Cal State Long Beach-based KKJZ was honored for best radio newscast under 15 minutes in a small market.
