The California Wellness Foundation is gifting $20,000 to support Brotherhood Crusade’s COVID-19 Community Rapid Response Fund, it was announced Tuesday.
The grant money will help Los Angeles community youth, young adults and families in the most under-served communities adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, directly assisting with basic living, academic and household needs — things organization leaders said are especially critical while schools and the Brotherhood Crusade YouthSource Center are closed in compliance with coronavirus stay-at-home rules.
“We’ve seen numerous examples across California about how COVID-19 is devastating communities of color,” said Alex Johnson, Cal Wellness program director. “Not only is the pandemic resulting in unacceptably large numbers of people infected and tragic loss of life, it’s also destroying minority-owned businesses and weakening nonprofits serving these communities. Brotherhood Crusade is critical to South Los Angeles’s fight against the pandemic, and Cal Wellness is proud to support their efforts.”
Since its establishment in 1992, the California Wellness Foundation has awarded more than $1 billion in charitable contributions and more than 9,200 grants.
Brotherhood Crusade, founded in 1968, is led by President and CEO Charisse Bremond Weaver. She said the organization is determined to carry on its life-changing programs and provide resources to families and individuals in need, especially through these challenging and difficult times.
“We are grateful to the California Wellness Foundation for this grant, which will support our continued and ongoing outreach during this pandemic to the neediest, most at-risk members of our community,” she said. “Their mission to protect and improve the health and wellness of the people of California by increasing access to health care, quality education, good jobs, healthy environments and safe neighborhoods is shining bright and igniting hope during these challenging times for the community and people we serve.”
