The city of Los Angeles will receive $1.37 million in state funding to continue providing free rides for students on the its DASH bus routes, officials said Tuesday.

The free service is offered to all Los Angeles Unified School District and Los Angeles Community College students. The money, via a grant from Caltrans, will ensure a second operating year for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation program.

The grant was part of $146 million in Low Carbon Transit Operations Program (LCTOP) funding for 166 local public transportation projects announced by the state agency on Tuesday.

“This investment will help reduce our impact on the environment and improve transit service, particularly for those facing economic barriers to mobility,” Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin said. “Greater access to transit options will lead to decreased dependence on driving and cleaner air for all Californians.”
