The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach announced Monday that applications are now open for the second year of its African American Scholar program.

The program provides funds for Black students pursuing studies related to careers in the aquarium field, including ocean education, animal husbandry, water quality, building maintenance or facilities, microbiology and business management.

The goal of the program is to bring meaningful opportunities in marine sciences to Black students, officials said.

“The Aquarium of the Pacific is committed to creating pathways for African American students to pursue careers in our field, and it has been very gratifying for us to collaborate with the first group of scholars from this program as they engage in the aquarium’s work,” aquarium Chief Financial Officer Anthony Brown said in a statement. “This has included developing new initiatives and serving as a platform for the scholars to connect with other scientists and the next generation of students. As the African American Scholar program enters its second year, I hope to see an even larger pool of candidates and encourage other zoos and aquariums to undertake similar efforts to diversify our industry.”

Recipients are encouraged to engage in various aquarium programs like writing for the members’ magazine and serving as judges in the environmental film festival for high school students. They will also have opportunities to meet with aquarium staff and hear guest scientists speak about their careers and connect with high school students in the Long Beach Unified School District.

Applications to the 2022 African American Scholar Program are due Dec. 31, and recipients will be notified by Feb. 1, 2022. Awards will be presented at the aquarium’s 20th annual African American Festival on Feb. 27, 2022.

Aquarium members, staff and corporate supporters like the Boeing Co. and Poms & Associates help fund the program.
