What was originally reported Saturday afternoon as a spill of human wastewater on an El Segundo roadway turned out to be dirt and was cleaned up in a few hours.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert about 4:30 p.m. for northbound lanes 3 and 4 of Pacific Coast Highway from Imperial Highway to Hughes Way due to “a human wastewater spill from a nearby facility.”
The mess did come from a West Basin Municipal Water District facility on Hughes Way and the incident was treated as a hazardous spill until the dark material was determined to be just dirt, said El Segundo police Lt. Tony Delarambelje.
It took about three hours to clean up the dirt and the road was reopened about 7:45 p.m., Delarambelje said.
