A barefoot woman who reportedly crawled under vehicles on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Costa Mesa was struck by a vehicle and killed Saturday evening, authorities said.

A witness first called the California Highway Patrol at 8:07 p.m. from the southbound freeway just north of Fairview Road. The witness told the CHP that the woman appeared to be about 50 years old, was wearing tan clothing and no shoes, and was yelling at and hitting passing vehicles and even crawling under vehicles.

At 8:12 p.m., the woman was hit by a vehicle in the middle lanes, according to the CHP’s log.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP issued a Sigalert at 8:45 p.m. shutting down southbound lanes in the area.
