A man who had been threatening to jump Sunday struck the ground in a 20-foot fall from a pillar in Boyle Heights as firefighters were preparing for a technical rescue and getting an air cushion into place.

Paramedics sent to 454 N. Mission Road, around 5:20 p.m. Sunday transported the unidentified patient to a regional trauma center in unknown condition, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Mark McLean. That location is at or near the Cesar Chavez Bridge, northwest of the split of the Hollywood (101) and San Bernardino (10) freeways, on the eastern side of the Los Angeles River.

It was not immediately clear if the person jumped or fell.

LAFD personnel remained on scene for “extensive equipment cleanup,” McLean said.

Metrorail shutdown tracks on the east side of the Los Angeles River. Railroad police shutdown tracks on the west side. Both tracks will open up for normal traffic when LAFD personnel are finished with their efforts, he said.
