An autopsy was pending Monday on a motorist who was killed after his sports car careened into the back of a cannabis dispensary and caught fire just off of Interstate 10 in Palm Springs.

The fatality occurred at 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of Garnet Avenue, just south of the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer David Torres told City News Service that the driver, identified only as an Indio man, was at the wheel of a 2024 Chevrolet Corvette going eastbound on I-10 “at high speed” when he apparently lost control and veered off the freeway and into the Bare Dispensary, also known as the Palm Springs Dispensary.

“The Chevrolet and the building then caught on fire,” Torres said.

Palm Springs Fire Department crews reached the location within minutes and discovered the motorist dead in the burning vehicle.

The blaze was quickly knocked down. No one was injured in the business, and the extent of damage was not reported.

“The driver of the Corvette was the only one involved in this crash and the only one sustaining injuries,” Torres said. “The incident is still under investigation, and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor.”

Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP Indio office at 760-772-5307.
