All lanes were shut down Friday on the 10 Freeway east of Coachella after a big rig transporting chemicals caught fire.

Around 7:30 a.m. Friday, a tanker truck hauling hazardous chemicals exploded near Red Cloud Mine Road east of the Chiriaco Summit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The lanes were being shut down at Dillon Road in Coachella, with westbound lanes also shut down in Desert Center, a Riverside County Fire Department public information officer told City News Service.

“We are working on opening eastbound lanes, but the closure will be in effect for an undetermined time,” the department said.
