The City of Palm Springs has earned a certification recognizing its commitment to supporting neurodivergent employees, city officials announced Wednesday.

The designation came from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), which trains and certifies professionals who work with autistic individuals.

The Certified Neurodiverse Workplace designation verifies that city staff completed training programs intended to “enhance their ability to hire, support, and retain neurodivergent employees,” according to a statement.

“We pride ourselves on being one of the most welcoming and inclusive communities in the nation,” Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein said. “It is important … that we do all we can to support and celebrate everyone.”

More than one in 10 children in the United States have ADHD, while one in 36 has received a formal autism diagnosis, according to CDC reports in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Citing those statistics, Bernstein called for local government to be a “diverse and inclusive place to work.”
