Firefighters stopped forward progress Saturday of an 83-acre vegetation fire north of Moreno Valley between Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The so-called Smiley Fire was reported at 2:36 p.m. Saturday in an unincorporated area at San Timoteo Canyon Road and Smiley Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The forward progress of the fire was reported stopped at 5:44 p.m.
At 8:15 p.m., officials reported the fire was 30% contained by lines of cleared vegetation and that firefighters were working in steep terrain to extend containment lines in steep terrain. Firefighters were able to walk the fire perimeter and determined the fire had burned 83 acres, instead of the original estimate of 15 acres.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters from Cal Fire in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and the Redlands Fire Department planned to spend the night clearing vegetation around the fire and putting out hot spots, fire officials said.
