An 83-acre brush fire north of Moreno Valley and near the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties was 65% contained Sunday, authorities said.
The Smiley Fire was reported at 2:36 p.m. Saturday in an unincorporated area at San Timoteo Canyon Road and Smiley Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The forward progress of the fire was reported stopped at 5:44 p.m.
At 8:15 p.m., officials reported the fire was 30% contained by lines of cleared vegetation, and said firefighters were working in steep terrain to extend containment lines. Firefighters were able to walk the fire perimeter and determined the fire had burned 83 acres, instead of the original estimate of 15 acres.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters from Cal Fire in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and the Redlands Fire Department planned to spend Saturday night and Sunday morning clearing vegetation around the fire and putting out hot spots.
