A vegetation fire north of Thermal that scorched more than 50 acres in heavy fuels and prompted evacuation orders was 65% contained Saturday.
The Shady Fire was reported shortly before 3 p.m. Friday at Shady Lane and Avenue 54 in an unincorporated area bordering Coachella, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
“The evacuation order for the area immediately surrounding the fire perimeter remains in place,” fire officials said. “The road closures on Shady Lane and Caesar Chavez between 54 and 55 will be re-evaluated this evening when the heavy equipment has cleared the area.”
The evacuation warning issued for the area north of Avenue 54, south of Avenue 53, east of Frederick Street and west of Tyler Street was lifted earlier.
A care and reception center was established at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal. Animals can be brought to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire wasn’t known.
