A fire possibly caused by fireworks ignited in grass in the transition between two downtown Los Angeles freeways Saturday and was threatening an apartment building in the area.

The fire was reported at 5:08 p.m. Saturday in grass on the right shoulder of the transition from the northbound Hollywood Freeway and the northbound Harbor Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were working to stop the fire, and the transition road was shut down to help them work safely, LAFD spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton said.

There were trees on fire near the apartment building that may have spread to the building itself, a witness told the CHP.
