Rock slides on Highway 74 Tuesday between Palm Desert and Pinyon Pines disrupted travel but didn’t damage any vehicles.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first boulders were reported at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at a bend in the area of Coachella Valley Vista Point.
Motorists managed to avoid the rocks, which appeared to be rolling off a mountainside adjacent to the southbound lane of the two-lane corridor, the CHP said.
Officers ran traffic breaks while coordinating with a ground crew to move the larger rocks to the shoulder of the highway, according to reports from the scene.
No damage was reported to the highway or to any passing vehicles.
Thunderstorm cells swept through parts of the Coachella Valley Monday, and there was rainfall last week in the area where the rocks came loose, possibly contributing to the slides.
As of 1:30 p.m., the highway was open and unobstructed.
