An off-duty Los Angeles County firefighter came to the aid of a woman in her early 90s today, dashing into a Long Beach hardware store to grab a utility knife and using it to cut through the convertible top of the victim’s crashed car.
The car rolled onto its side after hitting a parked vehicle about 2:05 p.m. at the intersection of Second Street and Argonne Avenue, firefighter- paramedic Jake Heflin said.
The woman did not appear to be seriously injured, but given her age and the force of the crash, she was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Heflin said.
It happened about 30 minutes after eight people were injured in a crash involving two vehicles, one of them a minivan taxi, at the intersection of Seventh Street and Campus Drive, Heflin said.
All eight victims were taken to a hospital, he said.
One person was in moderate condition and seven others suffered minor injuries, Heflin said.
