A 25-year-old man who killed his cousin in Artesia a year ago because he believed his estranged wife was having an affair with the victim was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Ulises Carbajal Velasco of Norwalk was found guilty Sept. 29 of first- degree murder for the Sept. 12, 2013, shooting death of Sergio Lopez, along with possession of a firearm by a felon.

Jurors found true a special circumstance allegation of murder while lying in wait, along with an allegation that Velasco personally used and discharged a firearm.

Velasco believed his estranged wife was having an affair with his cousin, but she denied it, according to testimony.

Velasco lured Lopez to a car under the pretense that he was looking for something, and then shot him from behind as Lopez bent down to look at something in the vehicle. Velasco left the scene, but returned and was arrested the same day.
