A 66-year-old motorist was killed and his 66-year- old passenger suffered critical injuries during a single-vehicle crash on the Pasadena (110) Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, where rain may have played a factor, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.
The crash was on the northbound freeway, north of Ninth Street, and was reported to the CHP at 9:10 p.m. Friday, according to a news statement from the CHP.
The motorist, a resident of San Pedro, was going north in a 2003 Nissan Frontier at an unknown speed in the number one lane and due to the driver’s “unsafe speed for conditions (rain), lost control,” according to the CHP.
The pickup truck the crossed over the two and three lanes, veered off the roadway and struck the concrete bridge rail on the right shoulder. The impact caused the Nissan to overturn.
The driver died at the scene. His passenger, also a 66-year-old man from San Pedro, suffered critical injuries.
Northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about three hours during the investigation.
