A man who reportedly flashed a gang sign before being shot several times Monday afternoon in South Los Angeles was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, police reported.

The drive-by shooting in the 5600 block of Halldale Avenue occurred about 1 p.m., said Sgt. Jack Richter of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.

A vehicle passed by, and shots rang out, according to Richter, who speculated that the unidentified victim and the four occupants of the car belonged to competing gangs.

Later, police reported that the victim’s condition had stabilized, but they had no information on the suspects.
