Several people were evacuated Thursday because of a fire that caused extensive damage to a fourplex in the Mount Washington area of Los Angeles.

The fire, on a steeply sloping lot in the 4200 block of Marmion Way, was reported around 3:55 a.m. and knocked down by 40 firefighters in 43 minutes, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Tom Sammartino said, adding that the cause was under investigation.

Flames breached the roof of the two-story building, a news videographer reported from the scene.
