A 57-year-old motorist was killed Saturday when his sport utility vehicle struck a stalled car on the Golden State (5) Freeway near Boyle Heights.
The crash on the southbound freeway, south of Mission Road, was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 1:14 a.m., according to a news statement from the CHP.
A 1998 Honda Accord, going southbound in the number lane, tried to avoid a crash with an unidentified vehicle that had entered its lane. The driver of the Honda, a 22-year-old woman, lost control of the car, spinning out and coming to a rest facing the wrong way in the number two lane, the CHP said.
The driver in the 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander, also traveling southbound at an undetermined speed in the number two lane, was unable to avoid the Honda Accord and struck it head on, the CHP said.
The driver of the sport utility vehicle, a 57-year-old man from Glendale, died at the scene. The motorist in the Honda suffered major injuries and was transported to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.
As a result of the initial crash, a second collision occurred when a taxi cab and a heavy duty commercial vehicle crashed into each other — to an attempt to avoid the initial crash, the CHP said.
The heavy duty commercial vehicle struck a guardrail and jack knifed, blocking the transition road from the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway to the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway. It was not immediately known if anyone was injured from that crash, the CHP said.
All southbound lanes to the Golden State (5) Freeway were reopened at about 4:55 a.m.
