A 22-year-old man who claimed he was angry with the government has been arrested in Palmdale for allegedly knifing the tires of a marked patrol car and later evading deputies, authorities said Tuesday.

According to witnesses and surveillance video, Palmdale resident David Morales entered the parking lot of the Walmart on the west side of the city on Oct. 29 and parked his car next to an unoccupied, marked patrol vehicle, Deputy Jodi Wolfe of the sheriff’s Palmdale Station said.

“With a knife in his hand, he exited his white Hyundai Tiburon vehicle and proceeded to walk around the patrol car, stabbing the vehicle tires and flattening out three of the four tires,” Wolfe said. “Morales quickly jumped back into his vehicle and sped away.”

On Friday, an off-duty Palmdale Station detective saw Morales driving north on Sierra Highway, but he was unable to get his license plate number and lost sight of the vehicle, Wolfe said.

A patrol unit from the sheriff’s Lancaster Station then saw the vehicle and tried to stop it, but Morales allegedly failed to yield and, with the deputy behind him, accelerated to 60 mph, ran a red light and narrowly avoided a collision with another vehicle, Wolfe said.

“For the safety of the public, the deputy immediately stopped following (Morales’) vehicle,” Wolfe said.

Detectives arrested Morales at his home about 11:30 a.m. Monday, according to Wolfe.

“Morales not only confessed to the crime but said he was angry with the government,” Wolfe said. “The knife used in the crime was recovered in the glove box of Morales’ vehicle.”

Morales was booked on suspicion of reckless evading and felony vandalism, Wolfe said.

He was being held at the Palmdale Station in lieu of $50,000 bail and was due in court in Lancaster on Thursday, according to sheriff’s online jail records.
