A man was gunned down Friday in a drive-by shooting in Compton.

The fatal shooting took place just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of East Elm Street and Poinsettia Avenue, according to sheriff’s Deputy Guillermina Saldana.

According to sheriff’s homicide detectives, the victim was crossing Poinsettia when a car came to a stop, the passenger in the front seat exited and fired at the man, hitting him once in the chest. The gunman then got back into the car, and the driver sped away heading south on Poinsettia.

No description of the getaway car or its occupants was available, according to the department. A motive for the attack was unknown.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Saldana said. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
