A burned out motor in an elevator shaft in the Landmark Square Building in downtown Long Beach Tuesday night brought more than 50 firefighters to handle the smoke and fire.

Smoke was reported coming from the 17th floor at the building at 111 W. Ocean Blvd. at 7:15 p.m., said Jake Heflin of the Long Beach Fire Department.

It took firefighters a while to find the source of the smoke which had filled the whole floor with smoke. The fire was extinguished a half hour later and repair crews were called to fix the elevator.

The elevator that was the source of the problems serves the 16th through 24th floors, Heflin said. The building has a Wells Fargo bank branch inside.
