A Lancaster man involved in a custody battle with his ex-wife intentionally slammed his sedan into a big rig parked alongside the Golden State (5) Freeway in Castaic, killing himself and his two young children, sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.

Alan Edwards, 46, and his children — Erick Edwards, 9, and Alona Edwards, 5 — died in the wreck, which occurred around 1 a.m. Monday on the southbound 5 Freeway near Templin Highway, according to the coroner’s office and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s officials said Edwards picked up his children on Friday for his scheduled weekend visitation, but he failed to return them on Sunday, prompting his ex-wife to file a missing-persons report.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Edwards “deliberately collided with a parked tractor trailer at a high rate of speed without making any attempts to stop, killing himself and two victims in the car.”

The big rig was parked in a brake-check area when it was struck, sheriff’s officials said.
