Firefighters on Friday rescued a homeless couple from the Los Angeles River in the Atwater Village area.

Rescuers were sent to the area near the 2800 block of North Glendale Boulevard about 9:40 a.m. on a report that two people were clinging to trees, said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Crews rescued a man, who was clinging to a tree on an island in the waterway, and paramedics took him to a hospital in fair condition, Main said.

Firefighters located and rescued the man’s wife late this morning, and she also was taken to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia, authorities said.

The rescuers also had to aid one of their own. A firefighter had trouble getting ashore and was pulled from the water by his colleagues.

Reports from the scene indicated that the rescued couple had been living on an island in the river. Their names were not released.
