Police scoured a South Pasadena neighborhood for 90 minutes just after midnight Saturday, and found a 22-year-old man they suspect broke into a South Pasadena home as a terrified resident locked herself in a basement.

The suspect was identified after his arrest as Micah Darrel Everett of Los Angeles, and he was found in possession of burglary tools, stolen property and narcotics paraphernalia, police said.

A woman in a residence in the 700 block of Monterey Road called police at about 12:30 a.m. for help, as someone was breaking into her home, according to a crime report from the South Pasadena Police Department.

A man broke into a locked sunroom door by cutting its screen, forcibly removing the glass and unlocking the door. He then cut a window screen on the main house, but was unable to get in there.

The hot-prowl suspect walked outside and tried to break into the home’s attached garage.

“The homeowner had locked herself in the basement while her 94-year-old grandmother was asleep above her,” according to the police report.

Arriving officers began searching the home, and escorted the residents out. As officers went outside to the backyard, they spotted the suspect and chased him.

The suspect ran away from the property across Monterey Road, and disappearing into the night. Chasing police were stymied by a passing train.

A containment area was set up with about 30 officers from the San Marino, Alhambra, Pasadena and Monterey Park police departments. Two helicopters from Pasadena and Pomona were brought in, as well as two dogs from Alhambra and Monterey Park police.

“Several residents inside the containment reported the suspect running, jumping and hiding on several different properties to avoid capture by police,” according to the news statement.

The suspect was captured in the 800 block of Orange Grove Place, following an extensive hour and a half search. He changed clothes in an attempt to evade capture, police said.
