Authorities identified a young man who was shot to death in Compton in an attack that sent another man to the hospital.
The shooting occurred in the 900 block of Poplar Street about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, sheriff’s Deputy Grace Medrano said.
Shon Jackson-Jorqueras, 18, of Compton collapsed and died a short distance from the shooting scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
Another man who was also shot was taken to a hospital in fair condition, and he was expected to survive, authorities said. A third man who was with the two others escaped injury.
Detectives said the three men encountered a group of men, one of whom pulled out a gun and opened fire. The assailant and his accomplices then fled in a vehicle — a description of which was not available.
Jackson-Jorqueras was found lying in the backyard of a nearby residence, and he was pronounced dead there, the sheriff’s department reported.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers, (800) 222-TIPS.
