A 37-year-old man was gunned down in Azusa early this morning and died at a hospital, authorities said.

Officers responding to a report of gunfire about 4:35 a.m. found the victim in the 400 block of Azusa Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, according to the Azusa Police Department.

“Based on the initial investigation, it appears the shooting might have been the result of an attempted street robbery,” according to a police statement. “Since Azusa Avenue is a main thoroughfare through Azusa, there may have been witnesses to this crime.”

The Azusa resident’s name was not immediately released.

The sheriff’s Homicide Bureau was assisting Azusa police in the investigation, and anyone with information about the shooting was urged to contact the detectives at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips also can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
