Heavy fog may have been a factor in Monday’s pre-dawn crash in which a pedestrian was fatally struck by a Los Angeles police bomb squad vehicle driven by an officer heading home from his assignment at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.
The accident in the 13600 block of Culver Boulevard was reported at 12:11 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
The victim, a man in his 50s, died at the scene, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. The man, possibly a transient, was wearing dark clothing, according to reports from the scene.
“It has been extremely foggy,” said Sgt. Elizabeth Ellis of the LAPD’s West Traffic Division, adding the fog could have been a factor in the accident.
The officer was assigned to LAX, and was on his way home when the pedestrian was fatally injured, said LAPD Officer Drake Madison.
“He is very distraught over this accident. On all fronts this is just a tragedy,” LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery told CBS2. “I was here earlier this morning, and I have to say that visibility (was) very poor. And in that particular section of Culver Boulevard there are no streetlights.”
