A man was shot in the upper shoulder in Compton Monday morning, authorities said.

The shooting at Oleander Avenue and Palm Street was reported about 1 a.m., said sheriff’s Lt. N. Mitry.

“The victim stated he was walking eastbound on Palm Street on the south sidewalk when he heard a gunshot from an unknown direction. He then learned he was struck by the round in the upper shoulder,” Mitry said.

The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment of his wound, which was not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

Deputies then talked to people in a nearby complex of apartment buildings who said they heard the victim and another person arguing, Mitry said.

“Deputies located evidence inside the apartment complex. It doesn’t look like the shooting occurred where he says it occurred,” he said.

An investigation was underway, Mitry said.
