A woman possibly living in an illegally converted unit at a commercial building that caught fire Wednesday in the Hollywood area was taken to a hospital in “grave condition” and a dog was killed in the blaze.

Firefighters were sent to the single-story structure at 4862 Santa Monica Blvd. at 7:11 a.m., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The building houses six businesses, two of which were    severely damaged, according to reports from the scene.

Crews cut through the roof of the building to allow smoke to escape and extinguished the flames in about 40 minutes, Humphrey said.

The badly injured woman appeared to have been living in an illegally converted unit, LAFD Deputy Chief Joe Castro said. She is believed to be 35 to 40 years old.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. The LAFD did not immediately release a damage estimate.
